HVACR Service Core Program*

Overview

The HVACR Service Core program is a comprehensive HVACR education program encompassing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration. It is specifically structured to enrich the skills of installers and technicians who are:

  • Just beginning in the HVACR industry
  • Continuing education for upgrading knowledge and skills, or
  • Preparing for certifications or licenses (NATE or ICE)

The content presented in each course focuses on learning objectives that have been identified by HVACR industry groups (ARI, NATE, RSES, ACCA, and PAHRA) as key knowledge for an HVAC/R technician.

This program is offered completely online and consists of one (1) math review and eight (8) courses in a specific educational sequence that fulfill the 160 hours needed for the HVACR Service Core Certificate. Even though it is self-paced, students receive a 60 day subscription for each course. Students are registered for one course at a time in a specific sequence. Upon successful completion of each course (a score of 75% or higher), students are registered into the next course and receive a certificate of completion for the completed course. After successful completion of the math review and eight courses students receive a Certificate of Completion for the Service Core Program.

The modules making up the Service Core Program are:

  • HVACR 050 Applied Math Review
  • HVACR 101 Fundamentals
  • HVACR 102 Basic Safety
  • HVACR 111 Electrical DC Theory Plus
  • HVACR 112 Electrical AC Theory Plus
  • HVACR 113 Electrical Common Components
  • HVACR 114 Electrical Motors
  • HVACR 121 Systems Properties & Measurement
  • HVACR 141 Refrigeration I

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Obtain an operational knowledge of the applied physics, terminology and mathematics that are the basis of all HVACR systems and utilized daily by HVACR technicians.
  • Identify and recognize the types of energy used in the operation of HVACR systems.
  • Know and apply basic safety practices in the HVACR workplace.
  • Gain a fundamental, operational knowledge of electrical energy and how it is used by HVACR systems and components
  • Recognize and become familiar with the detailed operation of HVACR electrical components and equipment, their functions, applications, interactions and importance to the system.
  • Learn the uses of physical energy as it applies to environmental comfort and HVACR systems. Specifically heat energy; its properties, measurement, communication, control and utilization in the operation of HVACR systems and related equipment.
  • Obtain a detailed knowledge of the refrigerant circuit; it's theory of operation, components and equipment. Measure the circuits performance as utilized in both air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Recognize and diagnose basic service related problems in refrigerant circuit operation and components.
