Description: The First Line Supervision and Leadership course provides students with an overview of general supervision concepts and methodologies. It helps the students understand requirements for making the transition to first-line leadership, and introduces the paradoxes of first-line supervision. Students will examine the role of a supervisor and the qualities of an effective leader and then develop strategies for effective communication, management, and training. Targeted toward individuals new to the management field who do not have a business education background, the course also explores team development and technological factors that affect leadership.

In most industries, the First Line Supervisor serves as the bridge between staff and management; this is the person tasked with communicating effectively to both of these groups and ensuring both understand the needs and concerns of the other. First Line Supervisors are key to cultivating positive morale among staff members and positioned best to identify a policy or procedure that is not working currently and improve upon these issues for the benefit of both staff and management. Being an effective First Line Supervisor takes a particular kind of self-starter with a constant eye toward improvement so as to not just oversee staff, but really take on new projects geared toward perfecting processes and enhancing the overall environment by taking all viewpoints into account. Moreover, successful First Line Supervisors are well-positioned for further advancement because of their ability to get things done with the support of their staff and management.

In this way, no First Line Supervisor can be successful without the right leadership skills that cultivate a real sense of cooperation, collaboration, and teamwork among staff, and between staff and management.
